BIG CONTRIBUTES TO TRANSFORMATION OF GENTOFTE KINO

25.05.2026

Gentofte Kino, a historic cinema in Copenhagen’s Gentofte suburb, is undergoing a major technical upgrade, with BIG contributing to the transformation. Supported by a DKK 2 million grant from A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Foundation, the renovation introduces a new Dolby Atmos sound system, an expanded screen, and upgraded acoustics, bringing the venue in line with leading cinemas across Denmark. Originally opened in 1938 as a functionalist cinema, Gentofte Kino’s modernization is being carried out with careful attention to its architectural heritage. BIG has contributed design and technical drawings for the auditorium’s new acoustic solution, supporting the integration of contemporary performance standards within the existing spatial framework. “Gentofte Kino was an institution in my childhood and my journey through film history. You could say I feel personally called upon to help ensure that it can continue to be a bastion of cinema culture at a time when the live cinema experience is challenged by screens of all kinds.” – Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG.
