TIME announced its inaugural ‘TIME Trailblazers: Designing and Making the Future’ list, which recognizes a group of architects, engineers, founders, technologists, and builders whose work is expanding what is possible across housing, infrastructure, climate adaptation, mobility, and public health. On the list is BIG Founder and Creative Director, Bjarke Ingels, alongside 14 others including ICON CEO Jason Ballard, Honnold Foundation founder Alex Honnold, and The Hydrous CEO Erika Woolsey. The new list highlights Bjarke’s design philosophies of ‘hedonistic sustainability’ and ‘utopian pragmatism’ through projects such as CopenHill, a waste-to-energy plant topped with a ski slope in Copenhagen; the BIG U and East Side Coastal Resiliency projects, conceived after Superstorm Sandy to shield some of Manhattan’s most vulnerable coastal areas from climate change; and Bukken Bruse, a converted retired ferry that Bjarke calls home.
