Amidst the holiday season in New York City, artist Bruce Munro’s Field of Light opened to the public on the Freedom Plaza site. Field of Light, situated between 38th and 41st Streets east of First Avenue, features 18,750 low-light, fiber-optic stemmed spheres that illuminate with a slow, subtle change of hue. Guests are invited to walk the winding path through the ethereal painted landscape framed by the city’s skyline and East River waterfront. The immersive installation was organized by The Soloviev Group, the developer proposing the Freedom Plaza development on the previously vacant six-acre site. Designed by BIG, Freedom Plaza is slated to include a publicly accessible greenspace, hotel and residential towers, a museum, retail, and a below-grade gaming area. Field of Light is set to be open for one year.
