Macondo Park has officially opened at Madrid’s Iberdrola Music venue following the opening weekend of Shakira’s month-long residency. Designed by BIG in collaboration with Komodo, Vampire and M2F, the 185,000 m² cultural destination transforms the concert grounds into a temporary city inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s fictional town of Macondo. Organized around a central plaza and eight thematic pavilions, the masterplan expands the concert experience into a landscape of music, dance, art, gastronomy, literature, cinema and fashion. Color-coded routes connect destinations across the site, while more than 500 tropical and Mediterranean trees create shaded gathering spaces and moments of respite for visitors throughout the residency. Built in just 10 days using lightweight fabric structures, modular scaffolding systems and reusable components, Macondo Park explores how temporary architecture can accommodate large-scale cultural events with minimal permanent intervention. Designed around reuse from the outset, the project’s structures, landscape elements and materials are intended to be dismantled and repurposed following the residency’s conclusion. Open through 11 October, Macondo Park will host concerts and daily cultural programming throughout Shakira’s 12-show residency in Madrid.
