The New York City Planning Commission has approved plans for 175 Third Street, a 27-story mixed-use tower in Gowanus, Brooklyn designed by BIG and dencityworks. Developed by Charney Companies and Tavros, the building will span over one million square feet and house more than 1,000 apartments – roughly 250 of which will be affordable – as well as a 28,000-sq-ft public park designed by Field Operations in collaboration with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. The building steps in a series of cascading concrete volumes, connecting on the east side to form a descending U-shape opening towards the Gowanus Canal. The horseshoe geometry maximizes access to light, air, and outdoor space, carving out room for the park, an internal courtyard, and a sequence of rooftop terraces.
