The Google Caribbean campus in Sunnyvale, California spans over 500,000 sq ft and consists of two interconnected buildings that stagger out of the landscape, with ascending zigzagging roof gardens that allow Googlers to walk or bike straight from the Bay Trail all the way to their desks.
The campus includes office space, expansive food programming, areas for fitness, and ample event spaces. Located in the Moffett Park development, Google Caribbean adds to Silicon Valley’s evolving tech hub, integrating principals of flexibility, scalability, and sustainability.
Straddling the West Channel waterway, Google Caribbean’s accessible roof terraces provide seamless transition from the green landscape to the workspace. The roofs’ dynamic form creates a visual dialogue between the architecture and the surrounding park-like environment.
Visitors are welcomed by Caspian Drive, a pedestrian-friendly promenade with sculpture gardens, BBQ pavilions, and outdoor fitness areas. These spaces spill into the campus, creating a lively public realm. A meandering path connects the two buildings, with small plazas offering moments for gathering and relaxation.
Google Caribbean reflects Google’s “Desk First” approach, offering enhanced daylight control, acoustics, and views. The south facades are punctuated by quadruple-height porches, forming the social heart of the buildings. Serving as both a functional circulation element and a social gathering place, the central stair encourages collaboration by connecting workspaces across multiple levels. All workspaces face north to further optimize daylight. Large glass walls and clerestories enhance natural light and views of the San Francisco Bay, making the interior feel like an extension of the landscape.
Google Caribbean’s sedum roof system not only reduces stormwater runoff and improves water quality, but also contributes to energy savings and thermal comfort. The campus’s landscaping and green roofs reduce urban heat island effect, while thermal massing further minimizes environmental impact and ensures long-term sustainability. A north-south oriented bike path connects the campus to the San Francisco Bay Trail and downtown Sunnyvale, with bike parking facilities at each green roof landing.
