PLOT CONDITIONS — The site merges two neighboring plots along the Black Sea coast in Riva. Local planning regulations require a 50-meter setback from the shoreline and limit development within flood-risk zones, shaping the boundaries of the buildable area and resulting in a total footprint of approximately 917 m².

LINEAR PROGRAM ORGANIZATION — The building program was initially proposed as a linear sequence to create clear circulation and a seamless visitor experience. Public functions such as the lounge and café are arranged above ground, while the spa is embedded within the terrain below.

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION ADJUSTED TO PLOT CONSTRAINTS — To respond to the site’s regulatory setbacks while maintaining the linear organization, the building volumes bend within the permitted footprint, resulting in a drop-shaped form that reflects both the program and the constraints of the site.

GEOMETRY ADJUSTED TO TOPOGRAPHY — The upper level aligns with the street, offering expansive views toward the Black Sea, while the lower level steps down with the landscape and connects directly to the ground.

ROOF & OVERHANGS — A pitched roof and deep overhangs protect the building from sun, rain, and the strong northern winds coming off the Black Sea. The roof draws inspiration from local vernacular architecture, where generous overhangs help shield buildings from the region’s changing coastal weather.

STRUCTURE & FACADE — The building’s curved form is developed on a structural grid derived from the interior layout. A timber louver system follows the geometry of the façade, shifting from solid walls to lighter screens that frame views toward the sea while providing shade and privacy.

SPA OPENING — At the center of the drop-shaped plan, the spa is located below ground. A landscaped opening carved outside the building footprint brings daylight into the space and visually connects the indoor pool with the surrounding landscape.

LANDSCAPE — Landscape is designed to enhance the site’s natural qualities while minimizing intervention. Paths connect the building to the beach and nearby attractions, including the Nature House, the amphitheater, and the broader Ion masterplan, linking the built environment with the surrounding coastal landscape.

THE DROP — The Drop acts as a central gathering point within the Ion Riva development. Its mass timber structure follows the site’s topography, combining basalt stone and warm timber to reflect the coastal landscape. Carefully integrated pathways, art installations, and seating areas enrich the visitor experience while preserving the character of the natural setting.
